Sustainability Through Our Eyes – Part 2
Sustainability is a key topic, but understanding and applying it in practice is not always straightforward. In recent years, we've had to realize that even defining ourselves isn't easy. However, perseverance and a complex approach help.
A system must be built from the ground up
Before we developed anything, I had to confront the fact that we couldn't articulate precisely enough who we are. We know what we make and why, but our external communication wasn't clear. Because of this, I couldn't even decide from what perspective to examine the elements of sustainability.
What sets us apart from many other brands is that we follow the product from the selection of the leather all the way to its wearer. We receive a lot of feedback and questions from our international partners, our resellers, and from you through our webshop. From then on, I tried to examine our processes from these perspectives.
Three main pillars
We define three main pillars of sustainability: environmental, social, and economic. A business, a brand, or even an everyday person can be considered sustainable if they keep all three in mind when making decisions. I must honestly admit: it's not easy.
These difficult, often undecidable questions lead us towards helplessness or disinterest. Because if you make a decision, however difficult, you will be criticized for it. Please don't fall into this trap. An imperfectly sustainable decision can still be good – because at least you're doing something instead of nothing.
Our principles
Economic pillar. Profit-oriented operation without generating overconsumption and wasteful storage, with a focus on preserving the craft.
Environmental pillar. Long-lasting products, consciously chosen raw materials, locality, waste management, renewable energy, repairable and repaired products, second-hand sales, recycling.
Social pillar. Adherence to principles followed so far, increasing the appreciation of the glove-making craft, preserving tradition, and passing on knowledge.
The first step in practice
This year, we are introducing the first part of our sustainability system on the domestic market. We put together the pictogram with graphic designer Csilla Varga – I hereby thank her for drawing the chaos in my head.
The new KARMA collection comes with a unique serial number for its owner. By registering the serial number, every customer receives an extended warranty, useful information, and repair services.
